INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman Asa Sandlund placed third in the 1500m free and junior Corrie Murphy was seventh in the 200m back to pace USC as the Women of Troy finished seventh on the final day of the 2000 Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind., on Saturday (March 18).
USC, with only six swimmers and one diver competing, finished seventh with 185 points. Georgia won the national championship with 490.5 points, edging second-place Arizona (472). Five of the Top 10 teams were from the Pac-10 in the short-course meter meet.
All seven USC competitors earned at least one All-American honor. Sophomore Kristin MacGregor earned the most with three.
Freshman Asa Sandlund became the last Trojan to earn All-America honors when she finished third in the 1500m free in 16:14.77. The time also set a Swedish national record in the event.
Murphy earned her second All-American honor of the meet by taking seventh in the 200m back in 2:11.63. She was eighth in the event as a freshman in 1998. Senior Paige Francis reached the consolation finals and took 12th overall in 2:12.20.
MacGregor, who finalled in both the 200m IM and the 100m breast earlier in the meet, had to settle for the consolation finals in the 200m breast, taking 13th in 2:30.14.
Freshman Michala Kwasny scored in her second event of the meet with a 15th-place finish in the 200m fly (2:13.49).
Sophomore Kellie Brennan, who earned All-American honors in both springboard events, took 19th in the platform (368.90).
USC's 400m free relay team of freshman Jennifer Parmenter, MacGregor, Murphy and Francis finished 14th in 3:46.55.
"The high moment today was Asa Sandlund's finish in the 1500m free," USC Coach Mark Schubert said. "Everyone on the team scored here during the meet. You couldn't ask for more effort out of seven women. They gave it their all. We didn't reach our goal of finishing in the Top 5, but they gave everything we have. We'll miss Paige Francis (USC's lone senior at the NCAAs), but we have a good corps returning and our future is bright."
The 2000 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships are Thursday through Saturday (March 23-25) in Minneapolis.
