LOS ANGELES - USC sophomore Kellie Brennan successfully defended her title in the women's 1-meter springboard and junior Marc Briggs of Arizona State won the men's 3-meter springboard on the first day of the Pacific-10 Conference Diving Championships on Thursday (Feb. 24) at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium.

Brennan, who entered the finals in third place behind Stanford's Erin Sones and Arizona's Lindsay Berryman, leapfrogged them both to win the 1-meter with a score of 405.90. Sones was second with 405.68 while Berryman finished third with 395.06.

Briggs, in second place after the prelims, won the 3-meter event with 514.55 points. Arno Bergstrom of Arizona was second with 464.30 while Ruben Vaca of Arizona was third (461.75).

The meet continues Friday with the men's 1-meter and the women's three-meter. The meet concludes Saturday with the men's and women's platform. Each day's events begin at 10 a.m.

The overall team championships for Pac-10 Swimming and Diving include points from both the diving and swimming competitions. The Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships are taking place Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 24-26) in Long Beach, Calif. The men's championships will be March 2-4 in Seattle, Wash.
