    Trojans Sweep Wisconsin In Two-Day Meet

    Completing two days of swimming an NCAA Championship schedule, the No. 3 USC women's swimming and diving team defeated Wisconsin, 176-119, while the No. 5 men's squad won 168-111 on Thursday (Jan. 19) in the final day of the two-day meet at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium.

    The Trojan women improved to 5-0 overall while the men moved to 3-1.

    USC's 800y free relay of junior Haley Anderson, senior Katinka Hosszu, sophomore Lynette Lim and senior Amanda Smith kicked off the second day by breaking the 1998 pool record (7:23.68 set by Stanford) with a 7:20.23. Wisconsin's `A' squad of Laura Miller, Beckie Thompson, Ruby Martin and Danielle Beckwith were second in 7:22.70.

    USC's `B' team of sophomore Jack Wagner, junior Alex Lendrum, sophomore Chase Bloch and freshman Cary Wright won in 6:46.80 while Wisconsin's Dan Lester, Andrew Nielsen, Keegan Kampschroer and Garrett Mulchrone were second (6:48.69). USC's `A' team was disqualified.

    Senior Tanya Krisman, one of seven Trojans with at least a `B' time in the 400y IM, led the race Thursday for the first 250 yards before junior teammate Haley Anderson took over the lead during the breaststroke. Anderson, a distance specialist who also has a `B' cut in the event, had no problem finishing over the final 100 yards of freestyle for the win in 4:17.08 with Krisman touching in 4:22.22 for second. The Badgers' Monika Stitski was third (4:25.65).

    Wisconsin's Michael Weiss led the men's 400y IM from start to finish for a win in 3:55.62. Trojan sophomore Sean Mulroy moved into second during the breaststroke and held on in 4:03.46 while USC junior Justin DiFederico was third (4:04.92).

     

     

    Thompson won the women's 100y free in 50.27, fending off Trojan junior Christel Simms, who charged into second in 50.72. Miller for Wisconsin was third in 50.97. In the men's 100y free, Colupaev came from behind to win in 45.30, edging senior teammate Jeff Daniels (45.36). Badger Wes Lagerhausen was third (46.05).

    Trojan junior Yumi So and sophomore Meghan Hawthorne battled through the first 100 yards of the 200y back before Hawthorne established a one minute lead with 50 to go and won in 2:01.02. So took second in 2:02.74 (just off a season-best) while sophomore Stina Gardell completed the Trojan sweep in third (2:03.76). Lendrum, the second-fastest Trojan ever in the men's 200y back, comfortably led the men's race from the start and won in 1:46.34. Wisconsin's Drew Teduits took second in 1:49.70, edging Karpov (1:50.30).

    Hosszu nudged ahead after the first half of the women's 100y fly before opening it up and winning in 55.08. Badger Rebecka Palm was second (56.37) while Miller was third (57.19). In the men's race, Morozov won in 48.45 ahead of Lester's 49.90. Mulchrone was third (50.96).

    Badger Ashley Wanland raced to a half body length lead midway through the 200y breast, ahead of Trojan junior Jessica Schmitt. Schmitt closed to within her shoulder with 50 yards to go but Wanland held her off to win in 2:13.72. Schmitt was second (2:14.34) while Anderson was third (2:17.88). Senior Will Orlady won the men's 200y breast in 2:06.57, edging freshman teammate Andrew Malone (2:07.26). Wisconsin's Tariq Miller was third (2:07.42).

    Lim swam from the lead throughout the 500y free, keeping Beckwith at her hip before pulling slowly away after the halfway mark of the race. While Lim went on to win in 4:52.00, the Trojans' Smith overtook Beckwith for second in 4:53.70. Beckwith was third (4:54.01).

    Weiss was seeking his second victory of the day and led through much of the men's 500y free before the Trojan freshman Bobrosky caught up with 100 yards to go and went on to win in 4:30.59, edging Weiss (4:30.72).

    USC's 400y medley relay of Simms, Carlson, Krisman and Hosszu downed Wisconsin for a final relay win. Hosszu edged Badger sprinting specialist Thompson at the wall for the victory in 3:43.05 to Wisconsin's 3:43.10. In the men's 400y medley relay, USC's `C' team of freshman Luca Spinazzola, Malone, Bloch and Morozov won in 3:18.76.
