    Seniors Lyndsay DePaul and Presley Bard, sophomores Haley Anderson and Christel Simms and freshman Stina Gardell won two events apiece to help the No. 5 USC women's swim team to a 156-92 win over UC Santa Barbara at the McDonald's Swim Stadium on Saturday (Jan. 8). USC, in an easy-going meet coming on the heels of a week of hard training, improved to 8-0 win the win.

    The women's squad of Bard, freshman Kasey Carlson, DePaul and junior Katinka Hosszu won the 200y medley relay in 1:42.67 to open the meet.

    Anderson, ranked among the top distance freestylers in the country, including No. 1 in the 1650y free, easily claimed the 1000y free in 9:58.61 while junior Amanda Smith took second in 10:05.50. Freshman Lynette Lim completed the sweep with a 10:07.5269

    Simms took charge of the 200y free from lane 7, winning in 1:52.64. Freshman Andrea Basaraba stayed on her hip for much of the race and took second in 1:53.03. Sophomore Kate Shumway was third (1:53.77). Simms later won the 200y back in 2:04.31, just ahead of Basaraba's 2:04.78.

    In the women's 100y back, Bard took the lead immediately and cruised to first in 56.27. She is ranked second in the nation in the event and already boasts an `A' cut (51.82).

    Carlson, USC's top swimmer in the 100y breast, was in a battle with junior Ania Kowalczyk, but touched first in 1:03.44, edging her teammate's 1:03.92. Junior Ella Kidron was third (1:06.34).

     

     

    DePaul, second in the nation in the 200y fly and owner of an NCAA `A' cut, finished first in 1:56.34. So was second in 1:59.68. No. 1 in the nation in the 100y fly with another NCAA `A' cut, DePaul won that event in an easy 55.46. Smith was second in 58.23.

    Bard returned to win the 100y free in 51.76 with UCSB's Emma Hunt (53.17) and Katie Tomkinson (53.21) in second and third, respectively.

    The Swedish Gardell, in her first meet as a Trojan, battled Schmitt in the 200y breast, the two turning almost even at the midway point. She opened a second lead with 50 to go and won in 2:17.14 with Schmitt second in 2:18.25.

    In the 500y free, Anderson won in 4:50.86 with UCSB's Andrea Ward second (4:57.35) and Trojan sophomore Lolo Blair third (4:58.39).

    Gardell came back to win the 200y IM in 2:01.77, an NCAA `B' cut. Schmitt was second in 2:06.34.

    In the 400y free relay, the squad of DePaul, Bard, Carlson and Hosszu won in 3:28.77, edging the USC B squad of Shumway, Smith, So and Simms in 3:29.11.
