THIS SEASON: A veteran international swimmer with Olympic experience, 2003 senior co-captain Asa Sandlund, who owns a 15 Swedish national titles, is an All-American freestyler who should be among the top distance swimmers in the nation this year.

2002: As a 2002 junior, Sandlund was 10th in the 1650y free (16:20.61, USC’s top time of the year) and 14th in the 500y free (4:46.29) at the 2002 NCAAs … At the 2002 Pac-10s, she was sixth in the 1650y free (16:32.90), 21st in the 500y free (4:55.02) and 27th in the 200y free (1:52.07) … At the 2002 Swedish Nationals, she won titles in the 800m and 1500m free.

2001: Sandlund, as a 2001 sophomore, finished seventh in the 1650y (16:18.98) free at the 2001 NCAA Championships, earning her second consecutive All-American honor in the mile ... She also was 17th in the 500y free (4:47.80) and 53rd in the 200y free (1:52.10) ... At the 2001 Pacific-10 Championships, Sandlund was second in the 1650y free (16:29.21), fifth in the 500y free (4:49.62) and 12th in the 200y free (1:50.75) ... At the 2001 Swedish Nationals, Sandlund won titles in the 800m and 1500m freestyles.

2000: Sandlund earned All-American honors as a freshman in 2000 by taking third in the 1500m free (16:14.77, sc) at the 2000 NCAAs ... She also was 13th in the 400m free (4:11.10) ... At the 2000 Pac-10s, Sandlund was third in the 1650y free (16:25.13), ninth in the 500y free (4:47.94) and 19th in the 200y free (1:52.80) ... At the 2000 U.S. Spring Nationals, she was 19th in the 800m free (8:50.46) and 23rd in the 400m free (4:20.77).

SWEDEN: Sandlund, from Linkoping, Sweden, came to USC after spending the previous year competing for the Mission Viejo (Calif.) Nadadores ... She has won Swedish national titles in the 400m free and 800m free a combined 15 times and was the Swedish senior champion in the 200m, 400m and 800m free events ... She competed for Sweden at the 1996 Olympics (800m free relay, ninth), 1997 World Short Course Championships (400m and 800m free) and at the 1995, 1997 and 1999 European Championships (400m and 800m free and 800m free relay).
