RIO DE JANEIRO -- Representing the United States, three-time USC women's volleyball All-American outside hitter April Ross and her partner Kerri Walsh Jennings posted a swift 21-10, 21-16 win over Italy's duo of Laura Giombini and Marta Menegatti in the round of 16 at the Beach Volleyball Arena on the sands of Copacabana Beach on Friday, Aug. 12.

Ross is going for her second straight Olympic medal. She won silver in 2012 with partner and former USC All-American Jennifer Kessy. Walsh Jennings seeks her fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal. She won the previous three with beach volleyball legend and former USC assistant coach Misty May-Treanor.

Up next, Ross-Walsh Jennings will meet a pair from either Australia (Louise Bawden/Taliqua Clancy) or Poland (Monika Brzostek/Kinga Kolosinska) in a quarterfinal match on Sunday, Aug. 14. Time for the match is still to be determined. Semifinals are set for Tuesday, Aug. 16, with medal matches slated for Wednesday, Aug. 17.
