April 25, 2013
LOS ANGELES - The No. 4-ranked USC women's sand volleyball team will host the USA Junior Beach National Team, featuring former Trojan Geena Urango, in exhibition matches on Saturday (April 27) at USC's new on-campus Merle Norman Stadium.
Play in the three four-team pools begins at 9 a.m., with the top two teams from each pool advancing to 3 p.m. matches for first, third and fifth places.
In addition to Urango, the 4-team USA squad will consist of Alex Murphy, Gigi Hernandez, Kathryn Plummer, Ivey Schmitt, Nicolette Martin, Jane Chafeh and Courtney Trevino. The USA team will be coached by Wayne Holly.
Urango, who played on USC's indoor team from 2007 to 2010, was the first scholarship recipient of the Women of Troy's sand program in its 2012 debut season. She and partner Sara Shaw went 19-17 last year as USC's No. 1 pairs team and made it to the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championship pairs quarterfinals.
The matches will serve as a final tune-up for the Women of Troy (14-6) before they travel to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala., May 3 to 5.
Saturday's competition will be a Zero Waste event, with the goal to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in a landfill by focusing on composting and recycling. The USC women's sand volleyball team is also doing a beach cleanup on Friday (April 26) at Santa Monica's Annenberg Beach House. Collaborating with USC's Office of Sustainability, the Women of Troy aim to show the possibilities of environmental awareness and sports.
