    Feb. 21, 2014

LOS ANGELES - USC sand volleyball freshman Kelly Claes (Placentia, Calif. | El Dorado HS) was named to Volleyball Magazine's 2014 Girls' Fab 50 on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Claes is regarded as the top sand recruit in the nation and is the only player on the list who will play sand volleyball exclusively in college.

Claes enrolled early at USC and will compete this spring. She joins a historic list of players to have been chosen for Fab 50 honors including Olympic legends Logan Tom, Lindsey Berg, and one of the best beach volleyball players in the world Misty May-Treanor, who is now a volunteer assistant coach for the Trojans. Most recently, fellow freshman Sara Hughes was named a 2013 Fab 50 selection and was also tabbed the top sand volleyball recruit in the nation.

Standing at 6-2, Claes joined Hughes to win a bronze medal at the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball Under 19 World Championships in Portugal and the duo also won gold at the USA Volleyball Beach High Performance Championships and the USA Volleyball Junior Beach Tour Santa Monica Open. Indoors, Claes played for El Dorado High School, where she earned 2012 Orange County Register All-Orange County first-team honors as she helped her team advance to the CIF Division 1A title match. Claes is also a member of the SoCal Juniors Volleyball Club. She was on the 2012 U.S. Women's Indoor Junior National Training Team.

Claes is joined by a trio of incoming USC indoor volleyball players who were also chosen for Fab 50 honors. Brittany Abercrombie (Carlsbad, Calif. | La Costa Canyon HS), Lauryn Gillis (New Castle, Ind. | New Castle HS) and Jordan Dunn (Corona, Calif. | Corona HS) will arrive on campus in time for the fall 2014 season.

The Women of Troy will host a special kick-off Alumni Match on Thursday, March 6, at Merle Norman Stadium, and begin the regular season with matches at Pepperdine and against Cal State Northridge in Malibu, Calif., on Saturday, March 8.
