    Shaw-Urango, Fuller-Hagglund Tie For Third At USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge

    The USC women's sand volleyball pairs teams of Sara Shaw-Geena Urango and Katie Fuller-Natalie Hagglund tied for third in the Gold Division of the pairs competition at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge in Hermosa Beach, Calif., on Sunday (April 15).

    Thirty-one pairs teams from USC, Pepperdine, Long Beach State, Hawaii, Loyola Marymount and Irvine Valley College participated in the single-elimination tourney, with the top 16-seeded teams playing in the Gold Division and the others in the Silver Division.

    Fuller-Hagglund lost in the semifinals to the tourney's eventual winner, Pepperdine's Caitlin Racich-Summer Ross, 22-20, 21-14. Earlier, Fuller-Hagglund beat Hawaii's Jane Croson-Ashley Lee in the first round, 21-17, 21-19, and then Loyola Marymount's Litara Keil-Betsi Metter in the quarterfinals, 21-17, 21-18.

    Shaw-Urango fell in the semis to Pepperdine's Lilla Frederick-Kim Hill, 21-18, 21-19, after earlier defeating Hawaii's Larissa Nordyke-Jade Vorster in the opening round, 21-10, 21-13, and Pepperdine's Kelley Larsen-Stevi Robinson in the quarters, 21-18, 17-21, 16-14.

    USC's other team in the Gold Division, Kirby Burnham-Kelly Irvin beat Hawaii's Emily Hartong-Elizabeth Stolzman in the first round, 21-17, 21-17, but fell in the quarters to Racich-Ross, 21-12, 21-10, to finish in a fifth place tie.

    In the Silver Division, USC's team of Kati Duddridge-Megan Thornberry advanced to the semifinals before losing to eventual Silver champion Tyler Jackson-Janisa Johnson of Long Beach State, 21-15, 21-17. Jackson-Johnson also beat USC's 2 other Silver teams on their way to the title: opening with a win over Erin Kaupp-Emily Young, 21-11, 21-9, and then Kendall Bateman-Eve Ettinger in the quarterfinals, 21-16, 18-21, 15-13.

    On Saturday (April 14), the Women of Troy went 2-2 in the USAV Beach College Challenge's team dual match competition, beating Hawaii and Loyola Marymount but falling in 3-2 matches to Pepperdine and Long Beach State.
