No. 1 USC Sand Claims 5-0 Sweeps Over Santa Clara and Boise State|

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. - The No. 1-ranked USC women's sand volleyball team (19-0) took out Santa Clara (6-3) and Boise State (3-10) with a pair of 5-0 sweeps on the first day of the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge at the Hermosa Beach Pier on Saturday, April 11. The Women of Troy have swept teams 12 times this season.
In the morning's first match against Santa Clara, the Trojans earned their first point when seniors Eve Ettinger and Meg Norton cruised to a 21-9, 21-5 win over GiGi Cresto and Jensen Cunningham on court three. Freshman Jenna Belton and senior Bria Russ put up a second point with their 21-9, 21-10 win over Lacey Maas and Mary Shepherd at court five.
USC's sophomore duo of Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes drew the clinching point with their 21-13, 21-14 win over Nikki Hess and Kirsten Mead on the top court. Sophomores Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler made the score 4-0 on their 21-15, 21-13 win against Katrina Inch and Sarah Vaccaro on court four. The sweep was completed with a 21-15, 21-19 win on court two as sophomore Sophie Bukovec and junior Alexa Strange defeated Sabrina Clayton and Danielle Rottman.
Facing a different set of Broncos, USC began its conquest over Boise State with a win at court four where Martin and Wheeler took out Laney Hayes and Taylor Murphey, 21-7, 21-12. Belton and Russ had the second point with a 21-6, 21-8 win over Jaymee-Lee Bulda and Maddi Osburn on court five.
Claes and Hughes delivered the clinching blow once again after they claimed a 21-9, 21-11 on the top court over Hannah Hubbard and Maddy O'Donnell. Ettinger and Norton went the distance in their first set with Aly Duffin and Katelyn Kinghorn, but righted the ship to finish a 21-19, 21-5 win on court three for the fourth point of the dual. Bukovec and Strange capped the 5-0 sweep with their 21-10, 21-13 win against Sierra Nobley and Sarah Baugh on court two.
In non-scoring matches, freshman Jo Kremer paired with three different partners. Sophomore Paige Hines teamed with Kremer to get a 21-14, 21-6 win over Santa Clara's Natasha Calkins and Gianna Ruggeroli. Kremer and fellow freshman Lorna Brandt went three sets with London Chow and Hannah Zalopany of Hawai'i, but completed the win, 23-21, 13-21, 15-10. Freshman Olivia Asprey and Kremer also went three sets in their match with Samantha Cash and Leanne Schroeder of Pepperdine, but fell, 21-17, 20-22, 15-13.
USC did not have any pairs play in the first round of the silver and bronze brackets that took place on Saturday. The Trojans will play as pairs in the bronze, silver, and gold bracket pairs' championships on Sunday, April 12, at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Matches begin at 10 a.m. PT.
