    HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. - The No. 1-ranked USC women’s sand volleyball team (17-1) won its 16th consecutive match with a trio of dual victories at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, April 12. The Women of Troy defeated Santa Clara, 5-0, and sixth-ranked UCLA, 5-0, to rack up their seventh and eighth straight clean sweeps with 12 overall this season. USC then took out Loyola Marymount, 4-1, to finish the day undefeated and win Pool A.

    LMU finished second in the pool with wins over UCLA and Santa Clara while the Bruins went 1-2 with a win against the Broncos. SCU went 0-3 to finish last in the pool. In Pool B, No. 2 Pepperdine finished 3-0 with No. 3 Hawaii just behind at 2-1. The Wahine defeated Bakersfield and Arizona. The Road Runners finished the day 1-2 with a win over Arizona and the Wildcats were last in Pool B with three losses. Unlike the event’s first year, coaches elected not to have pool winners meet in a final match.

    USC’s top pair of senior Kirby Burnham and freshman Sara Hughes produced its team-leading 24th victory (16th straight) on wins over Nikki Hess and Taylor Milton of Santa Clara (21-17, 21-14), Jessyka Ngauamo and Kamila Tan of UCLA (21-17, 21-17), and Litara Keil and Betsi Metter (21-14, 21-15) of Loyola Marymount.

    Sophomore Alexa Strange and freshman Kelly Claes put together their eighth straight win and reached the 20-win plateau as a pair with victories against Sabrina Clayton and Danielle Rottman of Santa Clara (21-9, 21-11), Zoe Nightingale and Madie Smith of UCLA (21-11, 21-9), and Avery Bush and Kathleen Luft of LMU (21-17, 21-15).

    The Trojans suffered their only dual pair’s loss of the day at court three where seniors Sam Hirschmann and Natasa Siljkovic earned wins against GiGi Cresto and Taylor Dayton of Santa Clara (21-16, 21-15) and UCLA’s Taylor Formico and Karsta Lowe (19-21, 21-19, 15-9) but were edged by Taylor Akana and Rachelle Suaava of Loyola Marymount in a three-setter, 21-18, 6-21, 15-13.

    At court four juniors Eve Ettinger and Bria Russ extended their winning streak to nine matches with wins against Madison Dutra and Sarah Vaccaro of Santa Clara (21-18, 21-13), Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye of UCLA (21-18, 21-16), and Caitlin DeWitt and Hannah Tedrow of LMU (21-16, 21-7).

    Trojan freshmen Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler produced their sixth straight win together at court five with victories over Lacey Maas and Katy Schatzman of Santa Cara (21-5, 21-11), Skylar Dykstra and Jennie Frager of UCLA (21-12, 21-11) and Ashley Maxfeldt and Anne Marie Taylor of LMU (21-9, 19-21, 15-12).

    In non-counting matches, freshman Paige Hines and junior Alexa Stonish claimed a 21-10, 21-15 win over Katrina Lott and Chloe Sliger of Santa Clara, and then took a 21-16, 21-13 win over Julie Consani and Natalie Miller of UCLA. Senior Mary Buckingham and freshman Alexx Murphy dropped a non-counting match to LMU’s Taylor Scioscia and Alyssa Walton, 21-11, 21-13, in the final dual of the day.

    The Trojans are back in action on Sunday (April 13) in the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge pairs tournament in Hermosa Beach, Calif. Individual draws will be set and announced the morning of the matches.
