Five Trojan Pairs Advance at Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Spring Challenge

HONOLULU - The USC women's sand volleyball team had five pairs advance at the Queen's Beach Sandbox through pool-play matches of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Spring Challenge on Friday, March 21.
The Women of Troy will be represented by senior-freshman combo Kirby Burnham and Sara Hughes (Pool A), seniors Sam Hirschmann and Natasa Siljkovic (Pool G), junior tandem Eve Ettinger and Bria Russ (Pool B), freshmen Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler (Pool D), and the team of sophomore Alexa Strange and freshman Kelly Claes (Pool E). The Trojan pairs will be seeded and placed into a 16-team single-elimination bracket set to be played at Queen's Beach on Saturday (March 22).
Burnham and Hughes teamed to cross the 10-win plateau as a duo with a 21-11, 21-8 win over Karlee Riggs and Hannah Rooks of Hawaii in Pool A. The two Trojans also defeated a mixed pair of Kelsey Fien of Nebraska and Mary Pollmiller of Arizona, 21-10, 21-16, to secure a spot in the bracket championship.
In Pool B, Ettinger and Russ dropped a 21-15, 21-10 decision to Hawaii's Karissa Cook and Brittany Tiegs but came back to take a 21-13, 21-14 win over Arizona's Allie Cook and Penina Snuka to grab one of two spots out of the pool
Martin and Wheeler defeated Arizona's Jane Croson and Madi Kingdon, 21-10, 21-14, and then turned around to take out Brenna Lyles and Alicia Ostrander of Nebraska, 21-19, 21-12, to advance out of Pool D.
Claes and Strange reached the 10-win mark as a pair with two wins in Pool E. First, the Women of Troy defeated Arizona's Taylor Arizobal and Ronni Lewis, 21-16, 21-5, before they earned a 21-13, 21-12 victory over Amanda Moriarty and Samantha Rummans of Hawaii Pacific University.
Hirschmann and Siljkovic came out of Pool G with two wins of their own. They took a 21-14, 21-10 win over Nebraska twins Amber and Kadie Rolfzen and then claimed a 21-4, 21-6 win over Christina Furrer and Kasey Thompson of Hawaii Pacific.
The Trojans are back in action on Saturday (March 22) as Queen's Beach hosts the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Spring Challenge's bracket championship. Matches are set to begin at 9 a.m. HT.
