HONOLULU - The third-ranked USC women's sand volleyball team (4-0) took out No. 1 Hawai'i (4-1) at the Ching Complex on Wednesday, March 18. The Women of Troy won, 5-0, to stun the top-ranked Rainbow Wahine, who were previously unbeaten.
The teams played in the first-ever sand volleyball dual at Hawaii's new Ching Athletics Complex in a match that featured a statewide live broadcast of the top two courts on Hawaii's OCSports channel. As such, the match was formatted to play in reverse order of the court pairings with only courts three and four active concurrently.
At No. 5, freshman Jenna Belton and senior Bria Russ scored the first dual point of the day with a 21-19, 21-15 win over Heather Boyan and Lara Schreiber. USC's sophomore duo of Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler put up a second point with a straight-set win over London Chow and Hannah Zalopany at No. 4, 21-17, 22-20.
Seniors Eve Ettinger and Meg Norton went three sets with Sammie Brown and Hannah Rooks at court three, but came out on top in a 21-17, 17-21, 15-9 decision to clinch the dual victory for the Trojans. When television went live, sophomore Sophie Bukovec and junior Alexa Strange took center stage on court two as the pair won, 21-17, 21-16, over Katie Spieler and Olivia Urban.
In the final match of the night, sophomores Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes battled it out on the top court with Nikki Taylor and Brittany Tiegs to come away with a 21-16, 19-21, 15-10 win and a clean 5-0 sweep of the Wahine. In a non-scoring match, freshmen Lorna Brandt and Jo Kremer lost to Gianna Guinasso and Sydney Shinn, 18-21, 22-20, 15-7.
USC will play a pair of neutral-site duals on Thursday (March 19) on Queen's Beach in Waikiki. The Trojans take on Nebraska (0-0) at 10 a.m. HT and then face California (3-3) for the first time in program history at noon HT. The Women of Troy will face pairs from Hawai'i, Nebraska, Cal, Hawai'i Pacific, and Chaminade in the Queen of the Beach Challenge on Friday and Saturday (March 20-21).
