USC Women's Sand Volleyball Wins 2 of 3 Duals Matches
March 16, 2013 LOS ANGELES - The No. 3-ranked USC women's sand volleyball team won 2 of 3 team dual matches on Saturday (March 16) at USC's new on-campus Merle Norman Stadium, beating No. 6 UCLA, 5-0, and Loyola Marymount, 4-1, but falling to No. 2 Long Beach State, 3-2. In the day's other team match, first-year program UCLA won its first-ever dual when it beat Loyola Marymount, 4-1. USC improved to 5-2 overall, Long Beach State moved to 4-0, UCLA is 1-2 and Loyola Marymount fell to 0-5. In the day's opening competition, USC won 4 of the 5 pairs matches, all by 2-0 sweeps. The Women of Troy won at No. 1 (Kirby Burnham-Bria Russ over Felicia Arriola-Kenna Crouse, 21-12, 21-8), No. 2 (Katie Fuller-Stevi Robinson over Ashley Maxfeldt-Rachelle Suaava, 21-10, 21-4), No. 3 (Eve Ettinger-Cinnamon Sary over Taylor Scioscia-Anne Marie Taylor, 21-10, 21-14) and No. 5 (Sydney Seau-Alexa Stonish over Amber Mirabello-Hannah Tedrow, 21-15, 21-19). The Lions' only victory came as Avery Bush-Litara Keil beat Sam Hirschmann-Natasa Siljkovic, 21-12, 21-16, at No. 4. In USC's sweep over the Bruins that concluded the day's play, the Women of Troy got 2-set victories at every spot: No. 1 Burnham-Robinson over Meg Norton-Kelly Reeves, 21-18, 21-15; No. 2 Fuller-Sary over Zoe Nightingale-Becca Strehlow, 21-13, 21-14; No. 3 Ettinger-Russ over Moenoa-Bojana Todorovic, 21-17, 21-13; No. 4 Brooke Fournier-Siljkovic over Karly Drolson-Karsta Lowe, 21-13, 21-15; and No. 5 Seau-Stonish over Rachel Inouye-Maddy Klineman, 21-12, 21-15. USC barely lost to Long Beach State, falling in the only 3-setter of that match as Lauren Minkel-Jocelyn Neely outlasted Fournier-Siljkovic, 21-18, 20-22, 15-12, at No. 4. The Women of Troy posted wins at No. 2 (Fuller-Robinson over Chelsea Cabrajac-Bre Mackie, 21-13, 21-10) and No. 3 (Ettinger-Sary over Delainey Aigner-Swesey-Libby Fontanilla, 21-19, 21-18), but fell at No. 1 (Caitlin Ledoux-Tara Roenicke over Burnham-Russ, 21-14, 21-16) and No. 5 (Tyler Jackson-Janisa Johnson over Seau-Stonish, 21-18, 21-15). In UCLA's victory over Loyola Marymount, the Bruins got wins at No. 1 (Norton-Reeves over Arriola-Crouse, 21-10, 21-14), No. 2 (Nightingale-Strehlow over Maxfeldt-Suaava, 21-15, 21-15), No. 3 (Moenoa-Todorovic over Scioscia-Taylor, 21-13, 23-21) and No. 5 (Inouye-Klineman over Mirabello-Tedrow, 14-21, 23-21, 15-10). The Lions' sole win came at the No. 4 spot, as Bush-Keil beat Drolson-Lowe, 21-19, 21-11. Play continues on Sunday (March 17) beginning at 9 a.m. as 15 pairs teams from USC, UCLA and Loyola Marymount will participate in a single elimination bracket tournament that will crown a pairs champion (the final is scheduled for 2 p.m.).
