No. 2 Trojans Take Wins Over No. 4 Florida State and LMU

LOS ANGELES - The second-ranked USC women's sand volleyball team (4-1) knocked off No. 4 Florida State (5-1) in a dramatic 3-2 victory and then defeated Loyola Marymount (1-4) in a 5-0 sweep to improve to 3-0 in home matches at Merle Norman Stadium on Friday, March 14. The Women of Troy defeated FSU in a dual match for the first time in three meetings and improved to 7-0 all-time against LMU.
Facing the Seminoles in the day's first match, the Trojans claimed a 2-0 lead in the dual with wins on courts four and five. At No. 5, freshmen Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler started things off with a 21-16, 26-24 win over Kayla Joyce and Fatma Yildirim. At four, juniors Eve Ettinger and Bria Russ came back after losing their first set to take out Katie Mosher and Sarah Wickstrom, 18-21, 21-16, 15-11.
With courts one and three split and headed to third sets, the Trojans sealed the dual victory from court two where freshman Kelly Claes and sophomore Alexa Strange took out Julie Brown and Melanie Pavels, 25-23, 21-19. At the top court, senior Kirby Burnham and freshman Sara Hughes won their first set, 21-18, but slipped in the second to fall, 21-18, 19-17, to Aurora Davis and Jace Pardon. On court three, Kristina and Stephanie Pellitteri went the distance to defeat seniors Sam Hirschmann and Natasa Siljkovic, 20-22, 21-17, 22-20, to put the second of FSU's points on the board.
In the afternoon match against LMU, Martin and Wheeler got things started with a 21-12, 21-14 win over Ashley Maxfeldt and Anne Marie Taylor at court five. Ettinger and Russ put up a second point from court four where they defeated Caitlin DeWitt and Hannah Tedrow, 22-20, 21-6. Claes and Strange sealed the dual with a win at court two, 21-10, 21-11 over the Lions' team of Avery Bush and Kathleen Luft. Hirschmann and Siljkovic turned a 21-14, 21-12 win on court three against Taylor Akana and Rachelle Suaava before Burnham and Hughes wrapped things up with a three-set win, 14-21, 21-14, 21-19, against Litara Keil and Betsi Metter.
In neutral matches at Merle Norman Stadium, Florida State took out LMU, 5-0, as Davis and Pardon completed a 21-11, 21-6 win over Keil and Metter at the top court. Friday's nightcap featured the Seminoles against No. 6 UCLA. The top two matches went to three sets, but fourth-ranked FSU prevailed with a 5-0 win against the Bruins (3-1).
The Women of Troy are back in action on Saturday, March 15, as Merle Norman Stadium hosts a pair's tournament with 20 teams from USC, FSU, and LMU, beginning at 9 a.m. PT.
