USC Women's Sand Volleyball Sweeps Cal State Bakersfield, Grand Canyon|

The No. 3 USC women's sand volleyball team posted 5-0 sweeps over Cal State Bakersfield and Grand Canyon, while Cal State Bakersfield beat Grand Canyon, 4-1, in team dual match play at USC's new on-campus Merle Norman Stadium on Thursday (March 14).
USC improved to 3-1 overall, while Grand Canyon fell to 0-3 and Cal State Bakersfield moved to 1-1 in its season-opening competitions. Both the Antelopes and Roadrunners are first-year programs in the NCAA "emerging sport."
The Women of Troy were extended to 3 sets only twice on the day. In the day's opening match versus Cal State Bakersfield, 4 USC teams posted 2-set sweeps: Kirby Burnham-Brian Russ at the No. 1 pairs spot (over Debora Araujo-Yan Fu, 21-13, 21-15), Katie Fuller-Steve Robinson at No. 2 (over Mariah Alvidrez-Shayna Guitare, 21-10, 21-9), Sydney Seau-Alexa Stonish at No. 4 (over Julia Bowen-Danika Youngblood, 21-15, 21-13) and Kati Duddridge-Sam Hirschmann at No. 5 (over Kelsee Sawyer-Star Tucker-Campbell, 21-12, 21-11). No. 3 Brook Fournier-Natas Siljkovic had to go 3 sets to defeat Lisa Bartsch-Molly O'Hagan, 21-15, 19-21, 15-12.
It was more of the same in USC's match against Grand Canyon, which concluded the day's play. Burnham-Russ beat Kristen Johannsen-Mackenzie Phelps, 21-12, 21-19, Fournier-Siljkovic beat Kaitlynn Ausmus-Caelen Hiller, 21-13, 21-13, Seau-Stonish beat Megan Davis-Chloe Jenkins, 21-13, 21-16, and Duddridge-Hirschmann beat Jessica Posse-Courtney Spackman, 21-7, 21-6. Only Fuller-Robinson went 3 sets, beating Sara Bowden-Shannon Dugan, 19-21, 21-14, 15-10.
Cal State Bakersfield won its 4 sets against Grand Canyon at No. 2 (Alvidrez-Guitare over Bowden-Dugan, 19-21, 22-20, 15-11), No. 3 (Bartsch-O'Hagan over Ausmus-Hiller, 21-18, 21-17), No. 4 (Bowen-Youngblood over Davis-Jenkins, 21-13, 21-14) and No. 5 (Sawyer-Tucker-Campbell over sisters Brittney and Courtney Spackman, 21-19, 21-13). Grand Canyon's lone victory came at the No. 1 spot as Johannsen-Phelps beat Araujo-Fu, 21-19, 21-19.
USC next hosts 2 days of competition this weekend. On Saturday (March 16), No. 2 Long Beach State, UCLA (in its first year of play) and Loyola Marymount visit for team dual match play, as USC takes on LMU at 9 a.m., followed by USC versus Long Beach State at 11 a.m., then LMU plays UCLA at 1 p.m. and ending with USC facing UCLA at 3 p.m. The format will consist of 5 matches between pairs, with each match being rally scoring best-of-3 sets. The Nos. 4 and 5 teams (and, if available, a No. 6 non-scoring team) will play in the first hour on the stadium's 3 courts, followed by the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 teams in the second hour of each dual match.
Then on Sunday (March 17) beginning at 9 a.m., 15 pairs teams from USC, UCLA and LMU will participate in a single elimination bracket tournament that will crown a pairs champion (the final is scheduled for 2 p.m.).
