LOS ANGELES - The third-ranked USC women's sand volleyball team (1-0) completed a strong 5-0 victory over TCU (0-9) to open the 2015 season on Thursday, March 12, at Merle Norman Stadium. The Women of Troy won their season-opening match for the fourth consecutive year and didn't drop a set against the Horned Frogs.
The Trojans' newly formed duo of senior Bria Russ and freshman Jo Kremer got things started for USC with a 21-8, 21-15 win over TCU's sister tandem of Chyanne and Chyna Perkins. The Women of Troy took a 2-0 lead after sophomores Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler teamed up to take out Sarah Grantham and Blaire Pickens, 21-15, 21-9, from court four. It was Martin and Wheeler's 25th all-time win as a pair.
The clinching point came from USC's top duo of sophomores Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes. The two delivered the win with a 21-14, 21-8 victory over Natalie Gower and Shane Peters at court one. The Trojans put up a fourth point from court three where seniors Eve Ettinger and Meg Norton came away with a 21-9, 21-11 win against Alexia Heist and Sutton Sunstrum. Junior Alexa Strange and sophomore Sophie Bukovec picked up the fifth point for USC when they finished off Macy Capen and Ashley Smith, 21-13, 21-15, at court No. 2.
The Trojans will get little rest before they must turn around and face a strong fourth-ranked Florida State squad (4-2) and No. 6 Loyola Marymount (1-3) in back-to-back matches on Friday, March 13.
