All-American and national champion Kirby Burnham enters her senior season with the Women of Troy.
Burnham played in the No. 1 pairs spot as a junior in 2013, and joined Stevi Robinson to win the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship pairs title and became USC's first-ever All-Americans in the sport... the duo went 25-4 and also won the 16-team USC pairs tournament, the exhibition pairs tourney against the USA Junior Beach National Team, and placed second in the gold division at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge pairs tourney... played some early season matches at No. 1 with Bria Russ (going 5-1) and Cinnamon Sary (going 2-0)... overall record was 32-5... served as USC co-captain... in the summer of 2013, she and Tara Roenicke placed ninth in the inaugural FIVB Beach U23 World Championship in Poland, she and Robinson were fourth at the Porta del Sol Beach Volleyball Tournament at Puerto Rico (part of the NORCECA Beach Circuit), and she teamed with Meg Norton to finish second at the Ontario Volleyball Association Grand Slam in Toronto... also teamed with current Trojan Sara Hughes to win the Open Division of the Huntington Beach CBVA tournament and the EVP Huntington Beach Winter Series in 2013.
After spending two years on USC's indoor team, Burnham competed on the sand as a sophomore in 2012... teamed with Kelly Irvin and played in the No. 3 and No. 2 pairs spots, posting a 22-14 record... the duo advanced to the quarterfinals of the first AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championship... in the summer of 2012, she worked with the USA Beach National Training Team, and finished seventh (quarterfinals) in a pair of NORCECA events (with Sara Hughes in Chula Vista and Stevi Robinson in Aruba), 17th with Jace Pardon at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Junior U21 World Championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and tied for 33rd with Pardon at the Jose Cuervo Manhattan Beach Open.
Burnham recorded 72 kills (1.71 kps) while appearing in 20 matches (starting seven) as a 2011 sophomore outside hitter... she hit .259 with 65 digs (1.55 dps) and had 81.5 points (1.94 pps)... Burnham made four starts in 20 matches as a 2010 freshman and recorded 38 kills (1.03 kps), seven assists (0.19 aps), two service aces (0.05 saps), 38 digs (1.03 dps), three blocks (0.08 bps) and 42.5 points (1.15 pps).
Burnham was a two-year varsity letterwinner at Newport Harbor HS in Newport Beach, Calif.... was a 2010 Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 selection, and earned All-America honors by Prep Volleyball... played on the 2010 United States U19 Beach training team... served as team captain for the Newport Harbor squad that won the 2009 CIF-SS Division 1AA championship... earned 2009 All-CIF Southern Section first team honors as a senior... named Most Valuable Player in the 2009 CIF Division I state championship match... named to the 2009 Orange County Register All-County team and the Orange Coast Daily Pilot Dream Team in 2008 and 2009... played club volleyball for the Orange County Volleyball Club... club team placed first in the Mideast Qualifier for the 2010 Junior Olympics and won the 16-1 championship at the 2008 Reno Volleyball Festival after finishing second at the 2006 Volleyball Festival... spent three years on the track team, competing in the hurdles and long jump events... member of the honor roll in four semesters at Newport Harbor as well as a member of the 4.0 GPA honor roll as a junior... current Trojans Alexa Strange and Mary Buckingham also prepped at Newport Harbor.
Kirby Burnham was born on Feb. 6, 1992... both of her parents and four grandparents are USC graduates... grandfather, Robert Morton, played on the USC men's basketball team in 1951-52... lists former USC women's volleyball player April Ross, who also graduated from Newport Harbor High, as her biggest sports hero... member of the National Charity League, where she completes 50-100 hours of community service a year... created her own neighborhood food drive in her community while she was in high school... majoring in communications.
