USC Women's Soccer Defeats SDSU, 4-1
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore forward Kaylee Whitfield (Santa Ana, El Modena HS) and sophomore midfielder Kim Clark scored two goals each as the USC women's soccer team blasted San Diego State, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at SDSU's AzTrack.
At 5-1, USC is off to the best start in its five-year existence. San Diego State fell to 3-2. With wins this week over the Aztecs and Fresno State (2-1, on Thursday, Sept. 11), the Women of Troy avenged their two non-conference losses of a year ago.
"This was a great effort in a big game," USC coach Jim Millinder said. "We did all the right things. We played hard, battled and used our skill players well to create good scoring chances."
Whitfield's first goal came in the 33rd minute. Junior midfielder Carol Hatcher passed the ball up the left side to Whitfield, who drove the ball with her left foot off the crossbar and into the net.
Clark then scored in the 43rd minute off a corner kick. From the left side, she hooked the corner kick into the net. It was the second time this season she has scored a goal like that. At halftime, USC led 2-0.
Whitfield made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute when a SDSU defender's miskick went right to her, and she knocked it in for her fifth goal of the season.
Clark scored USC's fourth goal in the 88th minute. She stole the ball from a defender near midfield, then beat the goalkeeper on a one-on-one, scoring her fifth goal of the season.
San Diego State avoided the shutout just before the final whistle, when Susan Mendez won the ball from a group of players around the USC net and scored.
USC is still without sophomore forward Isabelle Harvey, the Pac-10's top scorer a year ago and an honorable mention All-American. She is recovering from knee surgery.
The Women of Troy begin a six-game homestand at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Friday (Sept. 19) with a 3 p.m. match against Cal State Fullerton.
