USC Women's Soccer Rallies to Defeat Fresno State, 2-1

Fresno, CA -- Junior midfielder Carol Hatcher scored two goals in the games final nine minutes to erase a 1-0 deficit and help the USC's women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Fresno State on Thursday night at Bulldog Stadium in front of 1,026.

USC, at 4-1, is off to its best start in the program's five years of existence. Fresno State falls to 3-2.

"Our will to succeed was the key tonight," USC coach Jim Millinder said. "The girls played extremely hard. This was a game where nothing was going into the net, and their goalkeeper was having a great game, but we finally got it done. I'm very proud of this team for hanging in there.

Hatcher's first goal came in the 81st minute to tie the match, 1-1. Sophomore midfielder Kim Clark's shot from the right side was deflected by the Fresno State goalkeeper, but right to Hatcher, who was standing just a few feet away from the net.

The second goal came just three minutes later in the 86th minute. Junior midfielder Courtney Barham's cross into the middle was headed by freshman midfielder Andrea Warner right to Hatcher, who headed it in for the game-winner.

"Both balls were played perfectly to me," Hatcher said. "On the second one, Andrea headed it over the goalkeeper right to me."

The two goals ended 80-plus minutes of frustration for USC, which controlled the ball for nearly all of the game and outshot the Bulldogs, 19-11.

Fresno State had taken a 1-0 lead in the first half on freshman forward Jill Pearson's goal.

USC is still without sophomore forward Isabelle Harvey, the PAC-10's top scorer a year ago and an honorable mention All-American. She is recovering from knee surgery.

The Women of Troy next play at San Diego State on Sunday (Sept. 14) at 1 p.m.
