Clark Lifts No. 20 USC to First-Ever Win Over Stanford, 3-2

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Sophomore midfielder Kim Clark scored two goals and added an assist as the No. 20 USC women's soccer team defeated Stanford, 3-2, in the Pacific 10 Conference opener for both schools on Friday afternoon at New Maloney Field. It was the Women of Troy's first-ever win against the Cardinal in four tries.

USC improves to 10-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10. The Women of Troy are ranked No. 20 by Soccer Buzz and No. 23 by the NSCAA. Stanford falls to 4-6, 0-1.

The game was tied, 2-2, at halftime, and Clark scored the second half's only goal in spectacular fashion at 61:31. Stanford goalkeeper Erin Bryla went to get a ball that was rolling toward the left corner, but USC sophomore forward Kaylee Whitfield put her under pressure. Bryla kicked the ball upfield, but right to Clark, who blasted it home from 40 yards out.

Clark, who ranks among the national leaders in assists and the West Region leaders in points, now has eight goals and 10 assists for a total of 26 points.

"This is a great moment for our program," USC Coach Jim Millinder said. "We made some adjustments in the second half and it worked out. The defense was outstanding once again. There's no doubt in my mind that (junior defender) Meghan Reppe is one of the best marking backs in the country. Kim Clark was just magical today. She made the difference in the midfield."

Clark also scored the game's first goal at 10:44. Freshman forward Megan Orach made a nice pass from the right side into the middle, and Clark beat the onrushing goalkeeper. Stanford, however, scored less than two minutes later on Shauna Itri's goal.

USC regained the lead, 2-1, at 38:27. Clark's corner kick from the left side found junior midfielder Carol Hatcher wide open at the back post, and she headed it in. Once again, though, USC's lead was shortlived as Stanford's Elie Foster scored just 16 seconds later on a long blast.

USC next visits California on Sunday (Oct. 12) at 1 p.m.
