Trojans Shut Out At ASU
Nov. 5, 2010
TEMPE, ARIZ. - The No. 17 USC women's soccer team stalled out on the road tonight in Tempe, taking a 3-0 loss to the host Sun Devils in Pac-10 play. The Women of Troy fell in an early hole when Arizona State was handed a penalty kick opportunity, and the deficit got deeper as the Sun Devils worked ahead for the 3-0 final. That puts USC with an 11-5-3 overall record and a 4-3-1 Pac-10 record with one regular-season game left to go. ASU goes to 9-6-3, 3-4-1 with the win.
ASU's penalty kick earned and converted just five minutes into the game put the Trojans on their heels early. USC pressed to equalize, but fell victim to another Sun Devil score set up by a corner kick with less than a minute to go until halftime. While the referee's whistle continued to blow against the Women of Troy, USC was unable to capitalize on offense to cut into the lead in the second half. Down 2-0 midway through the second half, USC saw ASU's top scorer Karin Volpe also strike for the Sun Devils in the 70th minute of play, putting USC out of reach and running short on time for a comeback push.
The Trojans wrap up Pac-10 play and make their push for postseason positioning with their regular season finale at Arizona on Sunday (Nov. 7). USC faces the Wildcats at 11 a.m. MT on Sunday, with the NCAA Selection Show set for 1:30 p.m. PT on Monday (Nov. 8) on ESPNU.
