WESTWOOD, CALIF. -- The USC women's soccer team got stuck with a 5-2 loss to No. 2 UCLA on Friday night in the teams' regular-season finale at Drake Stadium in Westwood. A damp day saw the Bruins slide out ahead of the Trojans for a 3-0 lead before USC broke through early in the second half. Samantha Johnson and Kristina Noriega both scored for USC, with seniors Carly Butcher and Brittany Kerridge wrapping up their Trojan careers with assists in the game. USC finishes a tough 2011 season with a 7-13 overall record and a 4-7 mark in Pac-12 play. No. 2 UCLA improves to 15-1-3, 8-1-2.

The ball moved fast on the wet field following a day of rain. UCLA's speedy front line made the most of its first-half opportunities, taking a 1-0 lead on a Sydney Leroux goal in the 21st minute and going ahead 2-0 on a nice strike to the top corner from Sam Mewis in the 28th. USC freshman goalkeeper Carley Pennington made some huge saves and feisty challenges against Bruin attacks throughout the match, and got some key stops from her back line, including some goal-line stands from Autumn Altamirano. In the 34th minute, UCLA got loose again and managed to avoid an offsides whistle on the way to a 3-0 lead. USC's Elizabeth Eddy would challenge soon after on the other end, but got no whistle when she was upended deep in Bruin territory, leaving USC in a 3-0 hole at halftime.

Just over a minute into the second half, USC broke through. After a Brittany Kerridge corner was headed out, Carly Butcher rattled the cage with a booming shot that rebounded off the crossbar and within reach of Samantha Johnson, who finished off the opportunity to get USC on the board early in the 47th minute of play. UCLA would have an answer, however, as Leroux and Mewis both tallied their second goals of the night to take the Bruins ahead 5-1.

Haley Boysen put a hard shot on goal for the Trojans for a chance, but UCLA goalkeeper Katleyn Rowland made a nice save on the shot to keep the lead. She hauled in a dangerous chance by Ashli Sandoval a few minutes later, but she wouldn't be able to stop an 82nd-minute push by the Women of Troy. Brittany Kerridge lined up for the corner kick for the Trojans, sending the ball to the far post where Kristina Noriega was ready and waiting, knocking in the goal for USC to make it 5-2. Kerridge's assist was the 15th of her career, holding her at No. 8 all-time at USC and rounding out her senior season with nine assists on the year. Tonight marked the final game for five Women of Troy: graduating seniors Carly Butcher, Ashley Freyer, Brittany Kerridge, Ashli Sandoval and Claire Schloemer.
