BOULDER, COLO. -- The USC women's soccer team made it a road split on its first Pac-12 venture through Utah and Colorado this week thanks to a game-winner from Ashley Freyer off an assist from Colorado native Brittany Kerridge. The 59th-minute strike from Freyer provided the lift to victory, as the Women of Troy held on for a 1-0 win over host Colorado today in Boulder. USC improves to 7-12 overall and 4-6 in Pac-12 play. Colorado goes to 4-12, 1-8-1.
The Trojans served up 16 total shots against the Colorado defense, forcing seven saves out of Buffs goalkeeper Kayla Millar. USC controlled the stat line in the first half, putting up eight shots to Colorado's four as the Trojan defense limited the Buffs to zero shots on goal in the opening half. Colorado's offense heated up to the tune of nine shots in the second half, but freshman goalkeeper Carley Pennington hauled in three saves while her defense made a stop on another late and dangerous Buffs strike.
Meanwhile, the Trojan offense kept pressing. At home in the thin mountain air, senior Brittany Kerridge -- whose hometown of Golden, Colo., is not far from Boulder -- served the ball to fellow senior Ashley Freyer. Freyer finished the chance for the score -- her third goal of the year and 12th career goal -- to take USC ahead 1-0 in the 59th minute of play. That score would hold despite several close calls from the Colorado strikers in the final minutes. Kerridge's assist was her eighth of the year and pulls her up to stand alone at No. 8 all-time in career assists at USC with a total of 14. Freyer's goal was the senior's first game-winning goal of the season, and sends the Trojans back home on a winning note.
USC will play its final regular-season game of the year at UCLA at 7 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 4).
