No. 21 Cal Captures 1-0 Win Over USC|
Oct. 28, 2012
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The USC women's soccer team wound up with another one-goal loss today as the Trojans hosted another ranked team. No. 21 California managed a 74th-minute strike from its prolific scorer Ifeoma Onumonu, and that would stand as the winner in a 1-0 decision in the Bears' favor at McAlister Field. USC goes to 5-10-3 overall with the loss, and is now 2-6-2 in Pac-12 play. Cal improves to 15-4-0, 8-2-0.
Once again, USC put together a solid game, well balanced with good possession and defensive stops. The Trojans also generated some nice attacking series, although they were unable to crack the Cal defense, who had goalkeeper Emily Kruger make some bold challenges. USC's Caroline Stanley and her back line also put forth a stout stand against the Bears throughout the game. After a 0-0 lockup at halftime, USC came out hard to test Kruger with some long looks. Cal would get deep in Trojan territory next for a series of corner kicks, but USC was able to turn those chances away.
The Trojans' best scoring opportunity came in the 51st minute on a smooth series that saw Jessica Musmanno push the ball ahead to Katie Johnson. Johnson served up the centering pass for Haley Boysen with a killer header that forced a heroic leaping save out of Kruger. The USC attack continued, but the Trojan shots were just off the mark as the game stretched scoreless. USC defender Marlee Carrillo made a strong stop against a Cal push deep in the 70th minute to help keep the Bears quiet. In the 74th minute, however, Cal striker Ifeoma Onumonu kicked into high gear and carried the ball toward goal. The lanky forward had plenty of pace and worked her way into the box for a shot to the far post and in to tally her 11th goal of the year and give Cal a late lead in the match. The Bears would cling tightly to that advantage, and USC was unable to find the equalizer in the remaining time as the Trojans fell 1-0 for the third consecutive game.
USC now turns to host is season finale next week as crosstown rival UCLA comes to McAlister Field for a 2 p.m. game on Friday (Nov. 2) to wrap up Pac-12 play.
