LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- Seventy-five minutes of scoring silence gave way to a flurry of goals at the Los Angeles Coliseum today, as the USC women's soccer team answered two goals from Arizona by plugging in a pair from Marlee Carrillo barely four minutes apart to tie it up. In the first overtime period, however, the Wildcats were gifted two free kicks, the second of which proved the decider as Jazmin Ponce lined it up and curved in the winner from 25 yards out to earn Arizona a 3-2 win over the host Women of Troy. The frustrating loss puts the Trojans at a 6-7-2 overall and 1-4-1 in Pac-12 play, while the Wildcats go to 7-5-3, 2-4-0.

USC came out firing but came up empty in the first half, outshooting the Wildcats 12-2 in the half but remaining scoreless at 0-0 when the halftime horn sounded. In the second, though, Arizona was the enforcer early, with Ponce on the prowl with two tough shots on goal. USC goalkeeper Caroline Stanley was up to the challenge on both, first turning away a Ponce shot form distance and then poking out a dangerous Ponce free kick with another acrobatic save. USC's Elizabeth Eddy responded with a couple headers nodded just off the mark, and things were still scoreless as the half progressed.

In the 76th minute, the Wildcats broke the silence. Kaitlyn Lopez drilled a hard shot to the top left corner from the top of the box. Under three minutes later, Arizona was again on the attack. This time, Lopez was cruising up the left side, where Marlee Carrillo worked to run her down only to create contact in the box and get whistled for the penalty. Ponce lined up for it, slotting the opportunity to put USC in a 2-0 hole with 12 minutes left to play in regulation.

The Trojans were up to the challenge. Kayla Mills broke loose and went on the attack, going one on one with Arizona keeper Gabby Kaufman. Kaufman was there for the save, though, putting USC back to square one. Still, the Trojans kept coming. In the 83rd minute, Mills sent in a corner kick that was knocked down by an Arizona defender. Marlee Carrillo -- up high from her home on the back line -- was there for the loose ball, poking it through to the right post to put USC on the board and make things interesting. In the 86th minute, USC was deep in Wildcat territory once again. Mills was taken down outside the 18 on the left side and set up for the free kick. She'd put the ball neatly in the box, where a leaping Carrillo met it and knocked it through to level the game 2-2. That was the fourth goal scored in an 11-minute span of action, leaving both teams hungry for another opportunity in overtime.

USC pressed forward first. Then Arizona got ahold of the ball and turned back to the attack. The referee whistled Mandy Freeman for a mysterious foul near midfield first. The Wildcat free kick went up toward the area, where Autumn Altamirano was there for the stop. But again, the referee saw foul, giving Arizona another chance. The ball would be place near the same spot that Ponce had sailed a free kick from in the first half, where Stanley made an impressive save. This opportunity for Ponce, though, was a few feet closer to goal, and Ponce pounced on the chance, curling the ball and tucking into the upper right corner out of Stanley's reach to net Arizona the golden goal and leave USC reeling with the 3-2 loss.

The Trojans' next action takes them out of state for battles at Colorado and Utah. USC will visit Boulder first for a 2 p.m. MT matchup against the Buffs on October 25 before heading to Salt Lake City to take on the Utes at 1 p.m. MT on October 27.
