TEMPE, ARIZ. -- The USC women's soccer team saw a stretch of staunch defense and some solid possession dashed by a last-minute strike from host Arizona State, which handed the Trojans a 1-0 loss in their Pac-12 opener in Tempe, Ariz., today. USC goes to 5-4-1 overall and 0-1 in Pac-12 play with the loss to the Sun Devils, who improve to 6-3-1, 1-0.

Barely a minute after being delivered a yellow card by the referee, ASU's Devin Marshall was able to get loose on the front lines in the 90th minute. A scoreless match was shaken apart by the score, created when somehow Marshall avoided an offsides flag and ran down a pass, beating out an oncoming USC goalkeeper Caroline Stanley and putting the ball in the open net to give the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead after 89 minutes and 41 seconds of play. The Trojans couldn't find a way to equalize in the remaining 19 seconds, left empty on the scoresheet with the loss.

The Women of Troy had done a good job of controlling the ball in the midfield and turning away several ASU attacks. Neither team found anything more than a crossbar or a post at either end, although ASU was able to create 16 shots to USC's 13 in the match. Stanley impressed in goal with her athleticism and aggression, making five saves in the game while her Trojan defense did an equally excellent job of stymying the Sun Devils. The USC offense tested ASU goalkeeper Chandler Morris for three saves in the match, although one of the best looks of the day came from a Marlee Carrillo header that skated wide of the goal with 3:40 to go in the game.

USC's four losses to date have come in one-goal affairs, three of which saw the Trojans take either an overtime or late-regulation goal to fall in those matches.

The Women of Troy now return to home turf for two more televised Pac-12 conference tilts. USC will host Washington first in a 2 p.m. matchup on Friday (Oct. 4) followed by a 3 p.m. clash with Washington State on Sunday (Oct. 6) in a pair of matches at McAlister Field that will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
