DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 6 USC women's soccer team saw its four-match winning streak come to an abrupt end as the Women of Troy suffered a 5-0 loss to No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon at the Duke Adidas Classic.
USC (6-2) suffered the misfortune of having to face a North Carolina (7-2) team coming off a rare loss, and the Tar Heels took it out on the Women of Troy, scoring four goals before halftime.
"We made mistakes and we knew we had to play mistake-free soccer," USC Coach Jim Millinder said. "We made it easy for them, and it was over in the 20th minute. We needed to do a better job defensively. I felt better about our second half, but we didn't reach the level that we needed to play today."
North Carolina, the 15-time NCAA champion, got goals from five different players -- Anne Remy (13th minute), Kim Patrick (17th), Meredith Florance (20th), Lorrie Fair (31st) and Raven McDonald (87th).
USC's best chance for a goal came in the final second of the match, but sophomore forward Brittany Savelkoul's shot hit the post.
The Tar Heels outshot the Women of Troy, 29-5. USC sophomore goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes made eight saves in the first half while freshman Lauren Arase made four saves in the second half.
Previously, USC had beaten four ranked teams in a row -- Portland, UConn, BYU and Duke.
USC next travels to Fresno State on Thursday (Sept. 30).
