GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Abby Wambach launched a 25-yard shot at 109:07 of the second overtime period as the Florida Gators handed the No. 10 USC Trojans their first loss of the season Friday with a 2-1 victory. It was Wambach's second goal of the game.
Wambach tied the game at 1-1 in the second half with her third goal of the season. At 60:05 off a cross by Andi Sellers on the left side, Wambach knocked the ball off the back of her left foot behind her for a spectacular goal. Florida (3-4) outshot USC (5-1) by a 25-15 margin
Freshman Megan Abbamonto (Mission Viejo/Capistrano Valley HS) scored the Women of Troy's lone goal off the crossbar from six yards out at 31:41 off a cross from senior midfielder Isabelle Harvey (Cap-Rouge, Quebec, Canada). Harvey, a finalist for the Hermann Award for the best collegiate player in the nation, twirled around off a Florida defender on the left side and served the ball to Abbamonto. It was Abbamonto's second goal of the season.
The Gators almost tied the match in the first half in the 39th minute when Karyn Hall knocked a shot that hit off the left post and bounced out in front of the goal before the Women of Troy cleared the ball.
Freshman forward Jessica Edwards (Mesa, AZ/Dobson HS) led USC with five shots.
"I thought (Florida) was more competitive than we were tonight," said Head Coach Jim Millinder. "They are an outstanding soccer team and unfortunately, we caught their wrath tonight. Florida is a top six or seven team. It was a great battle, but in the end they deserved to win. I don't think we played as well as we could have, but those two goals were spectacular...there was not anything that (goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes) could have done about it."
