FALCON HEIGHTS, MINN. -- The No. 17 USC women's soccer team had the cards stacked against it today in a match against LSU at the Minnesota Gold Classic. The Trojans, coming into the game undefeated on the year, were dealt a vicious blow by the referee when a questionable red card put USC down a player after the 27th minute. Even down to 10 players, USC stayed strong, but the Tigers would be gifted a penalty kick -- LSU's only shot on goal in the entire match -- in the 64th minute. LSU converted, and the game ended as a 1-0 Tiger victory. USC goes to 3-1-1 with the loss, while LSU goes to 3-2-1.

The only statistical category that the Trojans didn't lead in the game -- besides the final scoreline -- was ironically the foul count. LSU was whistled for 15 fouls to USC's 12. USC out-shot the Tigers 13-7 overall and 7-1 on shots on goal. USC earned 12 corners to none by LSU, and forced seven saves out of the LSU keeper. But the Trojans were hamstrung by that early red card -- dealt by the referee only to the USC player involved in a mild jostling for position. The yellow card count, too, tipped in USC's favor with three yellows issued to Trojans while LSU earned one.

Regardless of the obstacles in the game, USC clearly was in control at both ends of the field. In the 64th minute, however, the whistle blew another challenge to the Trojan cause. USC goalkeeper Caroline Stanley went out for a challenge on the ball with an LSU attacker in the box. Stanley was granted a yellow for her efforts, and the Tigers were given a trip to the penalty stripe. They converted, and the Tigers' lone shot on goal in the match would go down as the game winner for LSU.

The Women of Troy now return home to McAlister Field for their Pac-12 Networks debut of 2013. USC will host Pepperdine in a 2:30 p.m. clash on Friday (Sept. 13). Next, USC will face LMU at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 15).
