No. 17 Trojans Take A Tie Against Ole Miss|
Sep 6, 2013
FALCON HEIGHTS, MINN. -- The No. 17 USC women's soccer team kept the pressure on Ole Miss through 110 minutes of action in the Minnesota heat, but the Trojans wound up with a tie in today's clash. USC's first matchup with the Rebels would extend to USC's first overtime match of the year. The Trojans remain undefeated in 2013 after the draw, now 3-0-1 overall. Ole Miss goes to 4-0-1 with today's tie at the Minnesota Gold Classic.
The Women of Troy out-shot the Rebels 5-0 in the first half, but came up empty on the scoring front. In the second half, USC turned up the pressure further and got on the board in the 62nd minute when sophomore Jamie Fink found freshman Kayla Mills for the strike from the far side of the box. The goal marked Mills' third of her young Trojan career.
Barely three minutes later, however, Ole Miss answered back, getting an equalizer from Rafaelle Souza in the 65th to make it a tense push through regulation. Still even after 90, the teams extended things to overtime. USC continued to test Rebel goalkeeper Kelly McCormick, forcing three saves on three shots in the first 10 minutes of OT. Still, the game was even. In the next overtime, the Trojans remained on the prowl. USC knocked three more shots in the frame, but was off the mark as the match wrapped up in a 1-1 draw despite the Trojans out-shooting the Rebels 14-5 in the game.
USC now turns to its next new opponent when the Trojans take on LSU in an 11 a.m. CT match that wraps up their competition at the Minnesota Gold Classic on Sunday (Sept. 8).
