PORTLAND, ORE. - The No. 1 USC women's soccer team was dealt its first loss of the year, going down on the road in a 1-0 overtime decision at No. 6 Portland. The Pilots got the game-winner seven minutes into the first overtime frame when Sophie Schmidt knocked in a ball that had rebounded off the post. USC moves to 2-1-0 overall with the loss, while Portland improves to 2-1-0.

Portland held the offensive edge in the first half, out-shooting the Trojans 8-2. But the USC defense weathered the storm, getting a save from starting goalkeeper Brittany Massro and a team save from a defender off the goal line. In the second half, Kristin Olsen stepped into goal for the Trojans. She also nabbed an important save during the second half, while the USC offense pushed back against the Pilots and out-shot its host 7-5 in the second half. Megan Ohai had a good look against Portland keeper Kelsey Davis in the 61st minute, but Davis was able to come up with a key save to keep the game scoreless. In the waning minutes of overtime, the Trojans kept pressing to create opportunities, only to have the whistle blow on the surge to leave the game at 0-0 through regulation and bring up overtime.

Portland regained some momentum for the early goings of overtime. A first Pilot shot attempt was blocked in the 93rd minute. And in the 97th, Portland got loose on the wing and served the ball in the box. An initial shot from Charney Burk rattle the post, and Sophie Schmidt got to the rebound and knocked it in to end the game as a 1-0 Portland victory. It was the first time the Trojans have come up scoreless in a match in 13 games, dating back to a conference loss at UCLA.

USC now returns to Los Angeles to open its 2008 home stand with an 11-match unbeaten streak at home. The Trojans will first host Santa Clara for a 3 p.m. match on Friday (Sept. 5) and then play Alabama at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 7).
