No. 1 USC Shuts Out Portland State 2-0|
Aug. 30, 2008
PORTLAND, ORE. -- The No. 1 USC women's soccer team pushed through the early goings of the 2008 season with another road win, topping host Portland State 2-0 on Saturday night in front of a packed crowd. After a scoreless first half, senior Nini Loucks knocked in her fourth career game-winning goal off an assist from Ashli Sandoval. Sandoval would later add to USC's tally with a goal of her own, as the Trojans bumped ahead 2-0 to secure the win. USC improves to 2-0-0 overall with today's road win. The Vikings move to 0-3-0 with the loss.
The win also registered the first solo shutout for redshirt junior goalkeeper Brittany Massro, who had two saves in her full 90 on the field. Anchoring the stingy USC defense, Massro faced two shots on goal. The Vikings on the whole were allowed only three shots on the night, while the Trojan offense generated 22 shots in the match.
After the first half remained stuck at a scoreless 0-0, USC took the lead in the 58th minute. Sandoval fed the ball to Loucks, who slotted her goal from about six yards out. In the 75th minute, senior Kelley Finch pushed the ball to Sandoval, who saw the Portland State goalkeeper coming off her line. Sandoval chipped the ball over the keeper's head and into the net to lift USC ahead 2-0.
With her assist on the game-winning goal, sophomore Sandoval bumped up her career assists total to 12 -- tying for the seventh-best total in USC history.
The Women of Troy now turn to face No. 6 Portland. USC visits the Pilots' home field for a 2:30 p.m. match on Monday (Sept. 1).
