Quincey Diving Header Propels Women of Troy to 1-0 Win Over Long Beach State in Season Opener|
Aug. 22, 2014
SAN DIEGO - A diving header from Alex Quincey snapped the deadlock between USC and Long Beach State in the 80th minute to give the Women of Troy a 1-0 victory at USD's Torero Stadium in game one of the USD Tournament, starting off the season and the Keidane McAlpine era with a win on Friday evening.
On the season opener, McAlpine said, "It was great to get the win today, although we need to play with better discipline and execution. Long Beach State outplayed us tonight, so we are fortunate to get away with a result and I am proud of the team for finding a way to get it done. This is a game we can build on. We will go back, watch the film, learn from it and hopefully come out with better execution on Sunday."
The Women of Troy and The Beach played a relatively quiet first half. Junior Katie Johnson had the lone shot on goal for the Trojans in the first half, coming in the fourth minute of play, forcing the 49ers' goalkeeper Ashton McKeown to make a diving save.
In between the pipes for the Women of Troy, senior goalkeeper Caroline Stanley tallied one save in the first half.
The Women of Troy possessed the ball much better in the second half and put on the pressure early, getting two great scoring opportunities with two of their four corner kicks coming within the first five minutes of the half.
In the 79th minute, sophomore Savannah Levin received the ball ten yards above the 18-yard box, and found a streaking Tamara Mejia down the left line. Mejia delivered a perfect cross that found the head of a diving Alex Quincey who finished off the diving header into the lower left corner of the box to put the Trojans up 1-0.
The Women of Troy held off a streaking 49er side in the final 11 minutes of play. The back line of Dominique Randle and Mandy Freeman held strong, and Stanley held her ground, making a huge save off a shot from The Beach's Mimi Rangle in the 84th minute.
The Women of Troy pulled out the victory, despite being outshot by The Beach 10-5. Stanley finished with four big saves and the Trojans tallied four corner kick opportunities.
The Women of Troy will be back in action on Sunday, August 24 when they face tournament host USD at 2 p.m. PT at Torero Stadium.
