WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC football quarterback Matt Barkley and women's rowing captain Melanie Grindle were each honored as the Pac-12 announced the 2012-13 Tom Hansen Conference Medal Winners today, July 3. The Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student-athletes based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics, and leadership.
Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac-12 renamed the award the Tom Hansen Conference Medal in honor of Hansen, who retired at the end of June 2009 after serving for 26 years as Commissioner of the Pac-10.
Barkley was a four-year starter who set Pac-12 career records for passing yards (12,327), completions (1,001), touchdowns (116), and total offense (12,214) as he won the 2012 Wuerffel Trophy, was a finalist for the Manning Award, Unitas Golden Arm Award, Senior CLASS Award, and ARA Sportsmanship Award and was a National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete. USC's first-ever three-time captain, he set 20 USC career, season, and game records (10 were Pac-12 standards). Last fall, he completed 63.6% of his passes for 3,273 yards and 36 TDs.
Grindle became USC's first-ever Pac-12 Rowing Athlete of the Year as she helped captain the Women of Troy to a program-best fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Grindle was also honored as a first-team Pac-12 All-Academic selection and took home first-team CRCA West Region honors. She held the bow seat in the varsity eight boat during her junior and senior seasons and helped guide the Trojans to two Jessop-Whittier Cup trophies, and the 2013 Pac-12 title. With a 3.63 GPA, Grindle graduates with a degree in business.
