USC Varsity Eight Knocks Off No. 4 Cardinal

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The ninth-ranked USC women’s rowing team claimed a victory with its varsity eight boat in a dual with No. 4 Stanford at Redwood Shores on Saturday, April 26. The Women of Troy crossed the finish line with a time of 6:32.24 to edge the Cardinal’s time of 6:35.51.
Junior coxswain Paige Fernandes called the race for the varsity eight with senior All-American stroke Vineta Moca setting the rhythm. Freshman Svenja Jonas sat at the bow followed by Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Elizabeth Turner, Madelyn Walters, Keret Einaste, Madara Strautmane, and Krisztina Gyimes.
Stanford’s second varsity eight had the better race against the Trojans in the 2V8 head-to-head battle. The Cardinal finished with a time of 6:57.35 to USC’s 7:05.60. Coxed by junior Kellyn Freire, the Women of Troy were stroked by Rebecca Shaffer followed by Lindsay Gibson, Darian DiCianno, Kajsa Olsson, Jelena Miladinovic, Eglit Vosu, Kamali Houston, and Shelby Adair at the bow seat.
With a margin of just over three seconds, Stanford also won the varsity four race with a time of 7:35.37 against USC’s 7:38.94. The Trojans’ boat was coxed by freshman Kaelyn Ibold with Frederike Hackenbroch at the stroke. Gitta Kivilaan sat at three with Sara Bilimoria at two and Katherine Gleadow in the bow end of the boat.
The Women of Troy return to LA for their only home event of 2014 as hosts of crosstown rival UCLA. The Trojans have never lost to the Bruins in a dual and will race head-to-head for the 13th time in program history. First races are set for 8 a.m. PT on Saturday, May 3.
