    Melanie Grindle Named Pac-12 Athlete of the Year

    USC women's rowing head coach Zenon Babraj was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the second time in his career

    At USC:
    Boasting an astonishing solo performance record, Gabriela Varekova will take a year away from the USC program in order to train with the Czech Republic National Team... in 2007, she rowed exclusively from the stroke position with the Varsity Eight in one of the most successful seasons in program history... selected to the 2007 CRCA All-West Region First Team, 2007 CRCA Pocock All-America First Team and the 2007 Pac-10 All-Conference Team while also being named the 2007 Pac-10 Women's Rowing Newcomer of the Year... her boat won the coveted Jessop-Whittier Cup at the 2007 San Diego Crew Classic (only the second time in USC history) and was also crowned the Pac-10 Champion after convincingly winning the Grand Final... contributed to bringing the Trojans their first Pac-10 Conference team championship and secured the second team bid to the NCAA Championships in school history... her Varsity Eight remained undefeated until the final race of the season... her fours boat finished first at the 2006 Head of the American Regatta.

    Rowing Highlights:
    Varekova rowed with VK Prerov for seven years (2000-2006)... named MVP of the VK Prerov crew four years in a row (2003-2006)... a member of the Junior Czech Republic National Team for four years (2002-2005) and a member of the Senior Czech Republic National Team starting in 2006... won the World Championship title at the 2006 U23 World Rowing Championships in Hazewinkel, Belgium... was the 2004 and 2005 World Rowing Junior Champion in double sculls... 25-time Czech Republic National Rowing Champion as a junior and senior rower from 2000-2006... earned best junior crew honors in 2004 and 2005 and best U23 crew in 2006 while with VK Prerov... named Prerov City Athlete of the Year in 2005... helped her doubles boat take seventh place at the 2006 World Senior Rowing Championships in Eton, England and third place in the 2006 World Rowing Cup in Munich... took fourth place at the 2006 World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland and seventh place at the 2006 World Rowing Cup in Poznan, Poland... won bronze at the 2007 World Cup in Amsterdam, Netherlands and repeated her gold medal performance for her fourth world title at the 2007 U23 World Championships in the double.

    Gabriela (Gabi) Varekova was born in Sternberk, Czech Republic... a 2006 graduate of Gymnazium Hejcin in Olomouc, Czech Republic... graduated with honors... is the second of four children, the eldest of which, Bara is also a rower at USC... younger sister Alexandra and younger brother Viktor still reside in the Czech Republic... lists chocolate as her favorite food and Australia as a place she would like to visit... would like to become a doctor.
