    Women's Rowing: NCAA Championships

    The second-ranked Women of Troy completed the 2013 campaign with a program-best fourth-place finish in the NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships at Eagle Creek Park on Sunday (June 2). USC's varsity four claimed silver in the fours grand final to take the podium while the Trojans' second varsity eight enjoyed a best-ever finish of fourth place. USC's varsity eight topped off the day with a sixth-place finish in its grand final.

    Kellyn Freire enters her senior season as a coxswain for the Women of Troy.

    As a junior, Freire coxed every race for the second varsity eight and led her boat to wins over Clemson, Louisville, and Virginia at the Pac-12 Challenge; a third-place finish in the grand final of the San Diego Crew Classic; and a win at the Lake Natoma Invitational. The 2V8 finished sixth at the Pac-12 Championships and in sixth place in the petite final at the NCAA Championships.

    As a sophomore transfer, Freire coxed every race for the second varsity eight and led her crew to a victory for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy at the San Diego Crew Classic. She also guided her boat to wins at the Lake Natoma Invitational, over UCLA in the USC-UCLA dual, and a second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships. Freire coxed the 2V8 to a fourth-place finish in the grand final of the NCAA Championships.

    Freire attended Loyola Marymount in her freshman season where she was named 2012 West Coast Conference Co-Coxswain of the Year. Freire received Gold Honors on the WCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll with a 3.81 grade-point average in accounting. She was one of just 24 athletes to receive an invitation to the USRowing Women’s National Team Freshman Camp. Freire guided the Lions’ varsity eight to a fourth-place finish at the conference championships and helped LMU to a third-place finish as a team. She coxed the varsity eight to a win at the Berg Cup, to a pair of victories over Saint Mary’s College and San Diego State in the NorCal/SoCal Challenge, and to a win over UC Santa Barbara. Freire also coxed the varsity four to a win over Santa Clara in the team’s final home dual.

    Freire attended Connelly High School in Anaheim, Calif., where she played soccer and ran for the cross country and track and field teams. She served as a coxswain for the Long Beach Junior Crew Club men’s varsity team.
