The Women of Troy held their own on the first day of competition and could stand to benefit from miscues on the part of the UCLA women. USC qualified three of its big guns-Brigita Langerholc in the 800m, Kinshasa Davis in the 200m and the 400-meter relay squad-but missed out on a chance to open up a big lead in the team standings when Aleksandra Deren (800m) and Angela Williams (200m) failed to make it to the finals of their respective events. Still, the Women of Troy remain, along with UCLA, in the driver's seat in the race for the women's team title.
Field Finals--
Discus: Junior Cynthia Ademiluyi came within seven inches of advancing to
the finals of the discus, placing 10th with a best mark of 166-1.
Track Prelims-
400-meter relay: The Women of Troy 400-meter relay squad-the defending NCAA champions-advanced to the finals of the 400-meter relay, finishing second to South Carolina in heat three with a time of 43.74, the fifth fastest time of the day.
800-meter run: Senior Brigita Langerholc, who sported the nation's fastest time in the 800 meters going into the NCAAs, cruised to a win in her heat. Langerholc ran 2:05.69 (the third-fastest time of the day) to advance to the finals scheduled for Friday afternoon. Junior Aleksandra Deren, who had the nation's fourth fastest time coming in, finished a disappointing eighth in her heat with a time of 2:13.40 and did not advance to the finals.
200-meter dash: Junior Kinshasa Davis, who finished second in the 200m at last year's NCAAs, blazed to a wind-aided 22.79 to win heat four of the women's 200-meter dash and advance to the finals on Saturday. Junior Angela Williams ran 23.11 to finish second in her heat. With only the top eight runners advancing, the two-time defending NCAA 100m champ missed qualifying for the finals of the 200m by two-one-hundredths (.02) of a second.
Davis on her finish: "I needed that (the win) to get moving. Now I just need to do what I have to do and just run my race."
