LOS ANGELES - USC women's lacrosse sophomore goalie Liz Shaeffer was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's (MPSF) Defensive Player of the Week for the week of April 14-20, the conference announced on Monday, April 21. She becomes the first lacrosse Trojan to win the league's defensive weekly honor. Women of Troy have been named MPSF Rookie of the Week on four occasions previously.
In two games this week, Shaeffer (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge HS) totaled 14 saves, six ground balls, and two caused turnovers. She had six saves in a close loss to Oregon, but faced 27 shots from the Cardinal and earned eight saves including holding 13th-ranked Stanford to a 2-for-9 result from the eight-meter arc. Shaeffer had two key caused turnovers in the first half against the Cardinal and sealed USC's win with a big save in the final minute; one of her six second-half saves. Shaeffer's eighth win of the year was the Trojans' first ever over a ranked opponent.
This season, Shaeffer leads the MPSF in ground balls with 40 (2.67 gbpg) and ranks fifth with a 9.90 goals-against average. She produced a season-high 14 saves against Colorado on April 11, and has had five games with four or more ground balls including a season-best six ground balls against Boston College on March 6.
The Trojans (8-7, 6-3 MPSF) snapped a three-game skid with their win over Stanford and will enter the league tourney as either the third, fourth, or fifth seed depending on the results of other remaining conference games. This week, USC concludes the regular-season schedule with a visit to Chicago to face No. 5-ranked Northwestern (9-5) as the two teams play in the first-ever lacrosse game to be held at historic Wrigley Field on Saturday, April 26, at 7 p.m. CT, on the Big Ten Network. USC then faces Marquette (5-10) in Milwaukee, Wis., on Sunday, April 27, at 1 p.m. CT. For more information, please visit USCTrojans.com.
