LOS ANGELES - USC women's lacrosse sophomore attacker Michaela Michael was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Offensive Player of the Week and the Epoch/Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week for the week of April 6-12. Among other MPSF awards, Colorado's Paige Soenksen was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week and Nicole Martindale of Denver received the Rookie of the Week award.
Michael (Hillsborough, Calif./Menlo School) scored nine goals, had two assists (11 points), and secured 11 draw controls in a pair of wins over Colorado (12-9) and Denver (16-4). She was instrumental in USC's come-from-behind victory over the Buffs as she put in a career-high six goals. She also had a career-high four ground balls in the game and added four draw controls. Against the Pioneers, Michael posted her 10th-career game with three goals or more. She won seven draws and helped the Trojans to their first-ever win over the defending MPSF Champions. This is Michael's second MPSF weekly honor. She was named Rookie of the Week once last season (Mar. 17, 2014).
Michael's is the Trojans' fourth offensive weekly award of the year (Caroline de Lyra, Feb. 9; Kylie Drexel, Mar. 16; Amanda Johansen, April 6) and pushes the school total for offensive and defensive player of the week certificates to seven all-time. The Women of Troy also own five Rookie of the Week honors. Michael's award from Lacrosse Magazine is the third national award for a Trojan player all-time. De Lyra and attacker Caroline Cordrey were each honored by WomensLax.com as National Rookie of the Week once in 2013.
USC (10-3, 6-0 MPSF) plays its final three regular-season games on the road. The Trojans start in Northern California and will face UC Davis (3-10, 2-3 MPSF) at Aggie Stadium in Davis, Calif., on Friday, April 17, in a 4 p.m. PT game. USC then heads to the Bay Area for a Sunday matinee with No. 15 Stanford (9-2, 5-0) at Cagan Stadium in Stanford, Calif., at 3 p.m. PT on Sunday, April 19. The USC-Stanford matchup will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
