LOS ANGELES - USC women's lacrosse freshman midfielder Michaela Michael was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's (MPSF) Rookie of the Week for the week of March 10-16, the conference announced on Monday, March 17. It is the first such honor for any Trojan this season and is USC's fourth overall MPSF Rookie of the Week award. Current sophomore midfielder Amanda Johansen received the honor three times in 2013.
Last week, Michael (Hillsborough, Calif./Menlo School) led the Women of Troy to a 15-10 victory over previously undefeated UC Davis with a game and career-high four goals to go with four draw controls and a pair of ground balls. She also added an assist and was two-for-two on free-position shot attempts. Michael and the Trojans out-shot the Aggies, 16-3, in the first half and built an insurmountable 11-0 lead before UC Davis got on the board.
So far this season, Michael has started all five of USC's games and amassed seven goals and two assists for nine points. She has taken 13 shots (12 on goal) with a .923 shots-on-goal percentage. In addition, Michael is 2-for-5 on free-position attempts and holds one of USC's three game-winning goals. She ranks second on the team with 12 draw controls and has also picked up three ground balls.
The Trojans (3-2) are on a three-game winning streak to match the longest in program history. On Monday (March 17), they defeated a tough Columbia squad, 9-8, thanks to a last-minute defensive stand and save by sophomore goalie Liz Shaeffer. USC plays the last of six consecutive home games on Wednesday when Princeton (2-3) visits McAlister Field for a 1 p.m. PT game. The game will be streamed live on USC's Pac-12 Networks portal page.
