LOS ANGELES - USC women's lacrosse senior defender Elizabeth Eddy (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) and junior attacker Caroline de Lyra (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore HS) were named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) defensive and offensive Players of the Week respectively on Monday, Feb. 9. The Women of Troy opened the 2015 season over the weekend and were narrowly defeated by No. 5 Northwestern, 12-11, in overtime.
While both Eddy and de Lyra are first-time MPSF lacrosse weekly award winners, Eddy becomes the first-ever USC female student-athlete to win conference player of the week honors in two different sports. She was named the Pac-12 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 26, 2013.
In the Trojans' season opener, de Lyra put up five points as she scored four goals and dished out an assist. De Lyra was one-for-one from the eight-meter arc, and caused a turnover during USC's 7-0 run to open the game. She was the Trojans' offensive catalyst and did work on the defensive end as USC held the Wildcats scoreless for 26:31 to begin the contest. As a freshman, de Lyra was chosen for WomensLax.com Rookie of the Week (Feb. 25, 2013).
On the other end of the field, Eddy was the Trojans' defensive standout with three caused turnovers, three ground balls, and one draw control. She was part of a USC effort that held the Wildcats scoreless for 26:31 in the first half en route to a 7-0 Trojan lead. It was the third-longest opponent scoring drought in program history.
Eddy receives the program's third MPSF defensive weekly award. Juniors Liz Shaeffer (April 21) and Courtney Tarleton (April 28) each earned the honor in 2014. De Lyra takes home USC's first-ever MPSF offensive weekly award. The Trojans also have four Rookie of the Week honors: three won by Amanda Johansen in 2013 and one by Michaela Michael in 2014.
USC is off this week before it plays a pair of games on the East Coast against No. 18 Stony Brook (Feb. 20) and Marist (Feb. 22).
