LOS ANGELES - The USC women's lacrosse team was selected to finish third in a preseason poll of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) head coaches released on Friday, Jan. 31. The Women of Troy finished fourth in their inaugural season under head coach Lindsey Munday and earned a berth into the conference tournament semifinals.
USC, which went 8-10 overall with a 5-3 mark in MPSF games last season, received 66 points and one first-place vote to be selected third behind defending champion Stanford which earned seven first-place votes and 78 points, and 2013's regular-season champion Denver which had two first-place votes and 74 points.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Cardinal was picked to win the league title. Stanford, which returns 11 of 12 starters from 2013 has won the MPSF crown eight times.
The coaches picked Oregon to finish fourth with 53 points. California (47), San Diego State (45), and UC Davis (34) were each chosen fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively. First-year program Colorado came in eighth with 23 points. Saint Mary's College received 16 points in ninth place and Fresno State had 14 in the 10th-place spot.
Last season, Denver went undefeated in league games with an 8-0 record. Stanford and California were each 6-2 and finished in a tie for second place. USC's overtime victory at San Diego State secured a 5-3 MPSF record and sent the Trojans to the league tournament as the fourth seed.
The 2014 MPSF tournament will feature six teams for the first time in league history. The top two teams at the conclusion of the regular season will receive first-round byes while teams 3-6 play in the quarterfinals. As last year's regular-season champion, Denver will host the tournament at Peter Barton Stadium in Denver, Colo., May 1-4.
