Popov and Virjee Named USC Student-Athletes of the Week|
Oct. 28, 2013
Women's Student-Athlete of the Week: Sophia Popov helped the USC women's golf team extend the school record for most consecutive wins (six) and victories to start the season (three) after finishing second at the 2013 Stanford Intercollegiate last week. The senior's 6-under 207 set school records for lowest 18-, 36-, and 54- hole totals throughout the weekend. She finished at 21-under 831. Popov fell a stroke short of first but tied her collegiate best of 207 and tied for seventh-best in USC history. Last season Popov was a Second Team Pac-12 All-Academic selection and received All-Pac-12 first team honors.
Men's Student-Athlete of the Week: USC senior Connor Virjee snagged his first MPSF Player of the Week award after hitting a career-high five goals in a key MPSF road win for the Trojans over No. 6 UC Santa Barbara this past weekend. Virjee had a hat trick in the books in the first period of play and finished up the 16-10 USC victory with a five-goal outing. Virjee entered his senior year with 45 career goals, but the senior has now provided 39 goals already in this one season, good for third most on the Trojan roster in 2013. Top-ranked USC improved to 20-1 overall and 2-0 in MPSF play with Sunday's win over the No. 6 Gauchos. This is the first career MPSF pick for Virjee.
