Sept. 15, 1999
Sunriver, Ore. - Freshman Candie Kung shot 214, the lowest scoring 54-hole debut in Women of Troy history, to lead the No. 4 USC women's golf team to a second-place tie in its 1999 season opener at the Oregon State Fall Preview in Sunriver, Ore., on Wednesday (Sept. 15).
USC and Arizona finished with a total of 882, just four strokes behind first-place Duke. Arizona State came in fourth, while UCLA finished fifth.
Individually, the much-heralded Kung (who prepped at Fountain Valley High in Fountain Valley, Calif.) placed second overall and her final score of 214 (76, 69, 69) was only three strokes behind leader Miriam Nagl of Arizona State. USC placed four golfers in the top 20 as junior Nicole Dalkas finished tied for 11th (72, 77, 73- 222), while sophomore Leila Chartrand (75, 77, 73- 225) and senior Linda Ishii (75, 76, 74- 225) finished tied for 20th. Freshman Yon Yim tied for 47th (74, 75, 82- 231).
Kung, who originally hails from Taiwan, comes to USC as the No. 1-ranked junior girl in the world. This summer she had six national junior tournament wins and made it to the round of 16 at the Women's U.S. Amateur. Amazingly, she has only been playing golf for about five years.
The Women of Troy next play at the University of New Mexico's "Dick McGuire Invitational " in Albuquerque, New Mexico,
on September 23-25(Thursday-Saturday).
