The No. 6 USC women's golf team showed off its depth on Friday (Oct. 23), taking a five-stroke lead without the nation's No. 1 player - Jennifer Song -- at the 2009 UNCW Fall Preview at the Country Club of Landfall's Pete Dye Course in Wilmington, N.C., =

The Women of Troy, under 14th-year coach Andrea Gaston, are without Song this week as she prepares to play in the LPGA Tour's Hana Bank - KOLON Championship in Incheon, South Korea, next week.

But with three other All-Americans in the lineup, Gaston's crew still put together a great opening round, leading with a par 288. UCLA and Arizona State are tied at 5-over 293 while Duke is fourth at 8-over 296.

Senior Belen Mozo led the Trojans with a 1-under 71 to tie for fifth overall while junior Lizette Salas and sophomore Inah Park are tied for ninth at even 72. Senior Caroline Kim is tied for 15th at 1-over 73 while senior Stefanie Endstrasser is tied for 36th at 3-over 75.

Playing one of the toughest fields they'll see all year, the Trojans were led by Mozo, who bounced back from a double bogey on 2 to birdie four of the final 12 holes. Salas and Park each had three birdies to offset three bogeys during their rounds.

Action continues Saturday and Sunday.
