Sophomore Doris Chen fired a 2-under 69 while junior Sophia Popov carded a 1-under 70 to lead the No. 3 USC women's golf team into first place at the Stanford (Calif.) Intercollegiate on Friday (Oct. 19).

USC finished a combined 2-over 286, good for a one-stroke lead over Oregon State (287) , two over Vanderbilt (288) and three over host Stanford and Oklahoma State (289).

Chen's 2-under was good for a tie for first. She sank five birdies in her first round against three bogeys, including four birdies between the fourth and 11th holes. She is tied with the Cowboys' Josephine Janson.

Popov, tied for fourth, opened with 11 straight pars before birdies on 12 and 15 and a bogey on 17. Freshman Kyung Kim is tied for 17th at 1-over 72. She survived a quad on the par 4 sixth hole thanks in part to five birdies.

USC freshman Kim Santiago is tied for 39th at 4-over 75 while junior Rachel Morris is tied for 77th at 8-over 79.
