Junior Sophia Popov, days after helping Germany to second place at the Women's World Amateur Team Championships in Turkey, led the No. 4 USC women's golf team with a 1-under 71 to open the 2012 Liz Murphey Fall Preview at the University of Georgia G.C. in Athens, Ga., on Friday (Oct. 5).

The Trojans, third in their first event this season, finished tied for third after the first round at 7-over 295. Auburn is in first at 1-under 287 while UCLA is in second at 6-over 294.

Popov, who tied for 12th with sophomore Doris Chen at the Cougar Classic in September, shook off any jet-lag issues and is tied for sixth at 1-under 71. She turned in a five-birdie effort Friday to offset four bogeys. She was 3-under on the back 9.

Chen is tied for 14th at 1-over 73. She opened with bogeys on 1 and 2 and got a birdie on 12. The rest of her round was all pars.

Freshman Kyung Kim is tied for 31st at 3-over 75, junior Rachel Morris is tied for 43rd at 4-over 76 and freshman Kim Santiago is tied for 77th at 7-over 79.

The event continues Saturday and Sunday.
