Senior Sophia Popov is in fourth at 4-under while sophomore Annie Park is even and tied for 10th as the duo led No. 1 USC to second place after a 36-hole first day of the Silverado Showdown at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif., on Monday (April 14).

The Trojans combined for a two-round 6-over 582 (295-287), maneuvering through a tightly bunched leader board into second-place by day's end, one back of Washington's 5-over 581. Oregon State is third at 7-over 583 while Northwestern is fourth at 9-over and Arizona is fifth at 14-over.

USC is after its ninth win in 10 events this season, though it is playing without junior All-American Doris Chen and sophomore All-American Kyung Kim. The eight wins this season is a school-record.

Popov led USC with a 36-hole 140 (73-67). Her second round marked her 21st round in the 60s as a Trojan, extending her Trojan career record. The round featured five birdies without a bogey. She also rallied for a 1-over in the first round thanks to a stretch of four birdies between 12 and 17. Popov carded a career-best 66 in the fall season at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

Park, who, with Kim, joined other 2014 Curtis Cup team members during a training camp in Missouri on Friday and Saturday, is in 10th at even 144 (70-74). She carded a 2-under first round with four birdies and turned in a pair of 1-over 9s in the second round.

Freshman Karen Chung is tied for 18th at 3-over 147 (75-72). In a steady two rounds, she had three bogeys and 15 pars in the first round and one birdie and one bogey in the second.

Sophomore walk-on Victoria Morgan, in her second career start, is tied for 37th at 7-over 151 (77-74). After a 5-over first round, she battled back in the second, going 1-over on the front and the back. Freshman Gabriella Then rounded out the fivesome and is tied for 45th at 9-over 153 (77-76).

Final round action - USC's last regular season round of the year - begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
